What to expect at Hala Sultan Tekke

Hala Sultan Tekke, also called the Mosque of Umm Haram, stands on the western shore of Larnaca Salt Lake and is one of the most important Islamic sites on Cyprus. It marks the grave of Umm Haram, a relative by marriage of the Prophet Muhammad, who according to tradition died here in 649 during the first Arab raid on the island when she fell from her mule. A shrine grew around three great stones said to have covered the tomb, and the complex as it stands was developed from 1760 under the Ottoman governor Sheikh Hasan, with the mosque, minaret, tekke rooms and cemetery completed in the early nineteenth century. It remains a place of pilgrimage as well as a monument, set among date palms, cypresses and olives with the flat white lake behind it.

A visit is short, quiet and mostly about atmosphere. From the car park you walk through the garden and past the fountain to the mosque, remove your shoes and enter; women cover their heads, and headscarves are usually available at the door. Inside, the prayer hall is plain and cool, with the tomb chamber to one side under the massive lintel stones, hung with green cloth and inscriptions. Outside there are Ottoman gravestones with turban finials, a small cemetery, and the courtyard where pilgrims sit in the shade. Then walk out to the shore. In winter, from about November to March, the salt lake fills and hundreds of greater flamingos feed within sight of the minaret, which is the image most people carry away from Larnaca.

Plan forty-five minutes and dress with the mosque in mind: covered shoulders and knees for everyone, a scarf for women, and shoes that come off easily. Photography is permitted in the grounds and generally allowed inside apart from during prayers, but never point a camera at someone praying. Avoid Friday around midday, when the mosque is given to worship and visitors are asked to wait outside. There is no cafe or shop; bring water. If you are here for the flamingos, come between November and March, since the lake is a dry white salt pan through summer and the birds are gone. Larnaca's seafront hotels are ten minutes away by taxi.

The tekke sits about five kilometres west of central Larnaca, signposted off the airport road and the B4 towards Kiti and Meneou. By car it is ten minutes from the Finikoudes seafront and five minutes from Larnaca International Airport, with a free car park inside the gate. Zenon Buses route 425 towards Kiti and Perivolia runs along the road past the salt lake and can drop you within a walk of ten to fifteen minutes; a single ticket is €1.50 and a day pass about €5, and the timetable is roughly hourly on weekdays. A taxi from the seafront costs around €12-15 each way, and many visitors combine it with Panagia Angeloktisti at Kiti, ten minutes further, in a single taxi hour.

There is no admission charge to the mosque, the tomb chamber or the grounds. A donation box stands by the entrance and a euro or two is customary if you have used a headscarf or been shown round; nobody asks for anything. Parking is free, and there is no ticket for the salt lake, the flamingo viewing points or the walking trail that runs along its shore. The Department of Antiquities card does not apply. Practically, then, the only cost of a visit is transport: a taxi from Larnaca at €12-15 each way, a bus ticket at €1.50, or fuel and a five-minute drive from the airport. Bottled water is not sold on site.

Best hours are 9:00 to 11:00 and the last two hours before closing, when the light on the lake is low and the coach parties have gone; midday in July and August is glaring, though the garden holds shade. Come between November and March for the flamingos and a lake full of water, and expect the salt pan to be dry, dazzling and birdless from June to September. Friday midday prayers close the mosque to sightseers for around an hour. Muslim holidays bring pilgrims in numbers and visiting is best avoided then out of respect. The site is otherwise open every day, 9:00 to 19:30 in the warmer half of the year and 9:00 to 17:00 in winter.

It suits anyone interested in Islamic architecture or the layered religious history of Cyprus, birdwatchers using the salt lake in winter, and travellers with a spare hour before a flight from Larnaca, five minutes down the road. Photographers get the minaret framed by palms and, in season, flamingos. Wheelchair users can reach the courtyard and garden on paved paths, though there are steps at the mosque door and the tomb chamber is tight. Children are usually engaged by the birds rather than the building. Skip it if you have no patience for dress codes and shoe removal, or if you come in August expecting a lake, because there will only be salt.

Nearby, the salt lake walking and cycling trail loops the shore with flamingo viewing platforms; Panagia Angeloktisti at Kiti with its sixth-century mosaic is ten minutes south-west; Larnaca airport is five minutes east; and the Finikoudes seafront, the medieval fort and the church of Agios Lazaros are ten to fifteen minutes into town. The honest caveats: the mosque interior is plain and the visit genuinely brief, so travellers hoping for a grand Ottoman monument will find something more modest and more moving. Aircraft pass low overhead on the approach to the runway, which breaks the calm. In summer the lake stinks faintly of brine and mud, there is no shade on the shore path, and the flamingos everyone photographs are simply not there.

Is there an entry fee at Hala Sultan Tekke?

No. The mosque, the tomb chamber and the gardens are free to enter, and the car park costs nothing. A donation box sits by the door and a euro or two is customary if a headscarf has been lent to you or someone has shown you round, but nobody asks. The salt lake shore path and the flamingo viewing points outside the complex are also free. The only real cost is transport from Larnaca.
