What three cheap days actually cost

Cyprus is not a bargain destination, but the fixed costs are low and the good stuff is cheap. Archaeological sites charge €2.50 or €4.50. City buses in Paphos and Limassol are €1.50 a ride or €5 for a day ticket. Intercity coaches between the main towns run €4 one way, or €7 return. The expensive line items are hotels in July and August, taxis, and any meal eaten on a marina. Avoid those three and a three-day trip lands near €280 a head, bed included.

Rooms are where you either win or lose. A studio apartment in the Universal or Tombs of the Kings area of Paphos is €45 to €70 a night in May or October, and a three-star with a pool near the Limassol Molos €60 to €90. The same rooms double in August. If you want the sea view that everyone comes for and cannot afford it every night, buy it for one night only and take an inland studio for the other two; the price gap is usually €40 to €60 a night.

Day one: Paphos on foot for under €15

Base yourself in Paphos, which has the cheapest beds and the densest cluster of sights. Start with the Tombs of the Kings on Tafon ton Vasileon Avenue, €2.50, then walk 25 minutes down to Kato Paphos harbour past the Fabrica Hill rock-cut chambers, which cost nothing. The Archaeological Park is €4.50 and worth every cent for the mosaics. The harbour mole, the fort exterior, the Agia Kyriaki basilica and St Paul's Pillar are all free. That is a full day of sightseeing for €7 plus water.

Eat like a local. A pork or chicken souvlaki wrap from a grill house off Agiou Antoniou Street is €4 to €5, a full sheftalia plate with chips and salad €9, and a bakery spinach pie plus a coffee about €4. Supermarkets, mainly Alphamega and Lidl, sell a decent bottle of Cypriot Xynisteri for €5 and halloumi for €3.50, so a beach picnic beats any taverna on price. Public showers and toilets on the municipal beaches are free, and Municipal Beach in Kato Paphos has a free lifeguarded stretch.

Day two: Coral Bay and the Akamas edge by bus

The OSYPA 615 bus runs from Kato Paphos harbour to Coral Bay roughly every 15 to 20 minutes in summer and every 30 in winter, €1.50 single, €5 day ticket. Coral Bay is the best free swim on the west coast: soft sand, lifeguards from April to October, and free street parking if you do drive. Bring your own umbrella if you have one, because sunbed pairs cost €10 to €12.50. Walk 20 minutes north from the bay to the Agios Georgios headland at Pegeia for a completely empty coastline and a small harbour with two tavernas.

In the late afternoon, take the same bus back and stop at Paphos Municipal Gardens or the Kato Paphos coastal path, a paved 3 km walkway that runs from the harbour past the archaeological park boundary and out to the Tombs. It is free, flat and lit at night. Dinner: a mixed meat meze split between two people is €22 to €25 each in a village taverna in Mesogi or Tala, ten minutes inland, against €32 on the harbour. If you have no car, order two mains and share; portions here are large.

Day three: Limassol by intercity coach

Intercity Buses run Paphos to Limassol roughly hourly from the Karavella terminal, about 70 minutes and €4 one way. From the Limassol drop-off, walk the Molos promenade, which is free and runs 1.7 km along the water with sculptures, palm shade and public showers. Limassol Castle is €4.50, the Old Port lanes and Saripolou Square cost nothing to wander, and the Municipal Market on Saripolou has fruit, olives and bread at supermarket prices rather than tourist ones.

For a beach afternoon, the EMEL 30 bus runs the length of the coast road east from the centre, €1.50 a ride or €5 all day, past Dasoudi Beach with its free eucalyptus grove and public loos. If you would rather see one big ruin, the 16 bus reaches Kourion, entry €4.50, but check the return times before you commit because the service thins out after 16:00. Get the last coach back to Paphos, usually around 19:00 in summer, or spend a third cheap night in Limassol and fly out of Larnaca.

Sleeping cheap within reach of the water

The reliable budget zones are the Universal and Tomb of the Kings roads in Paphos, the Yermasoyia and Potamos Germasogeias blocks in Limassol, and the streets behind Finikoudes in Larnaca. In each, you are ten to fifteen minutes on foot from sand and paying €45 to €80 a night out of high season. Look for studios with a kitchenette; breakfast at the hotel typically costs €10 to €14 a head, while yogurt, bread, tomatoes and halloumi from Lidl feed two people for €7.

Two timing tricks matter more than any discount code. First, avoid 20 July to 25 August, when the same room can triple. Second, arrive midweek: Friday and Saturday nights carry a premium on the Limassol coast because of domestic weekenders. If you have flexibility, November to March gives you four-star sea-view rooms for €70 to €100, heated pools, empty archaeological sites and daytime highs around 18°C, which is fine for walking even if it is not fine for swimming.

Where budget travellers waste money here

Taxis are the biggest leak. There is no widespread ride-hailing, meters start around €4 and a 15-minute hop can hit €18; the airport run from Paphos to Kato Paphos is €25 to €30 against €1.50 for the shuttle bus. Second leak: boat trips sold on the harbour at €40 to €55 that duplicate a beach you can reach for €1.50. Third: bottled water at €2 in tourist strips when the same six-pack is €1.20 in a supermarket. Cyprus tap water is safe on the mainland grid; most locals drink filtered.

Tipping is not obligatory and there is often a 10 percent service charge already printed on the bill, so check before adding more. Rounding up or leaving €2 to €3 for good service is normal. Finally, do not pay for a hire car you will use twice. Three days of coastal sightseeing by bus costs about €20 in fares; three days of car hire, fuel and parking is €130 to €170. Hire it for one day only if you want Kourion, the wine villages or Aphrodite's Rock.
